STSC certification prep, one briefing sheet at a time

The STSC is the Safety Trained Supervisor Construction certification, issued by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) to people who lead construction work and carry safety duties alongside it. Tailgate Brief breaks its exam into short briefing sheets you can read, drill, and then test against a clock.

Who the credential is written for

BCSP describes the STSC as intended for "executives, directors, managers, supervisors, superintendents, and employees" in construction who "may not have safety as a primary duty" (BCSP's Complete Guide to Safety Certification, June 2026, as of October 2026). On a job site that is the foreman who runs the morning tailgate talk, the superintendent who signs off the job hazard analysis (JHA), the lead who decides whether the trench box goes in before anyone climbs down.

To apply, BCSP asks for 30 hours of safety and health training plus one of four experience or education routes, such as two years of supervisory experience related to construction. The STSC requirements sheet sets out all four routes in BCSP's wording.

How the site is laid out

  1. Read the sheet

The STSC study guide shows the STSC7 blueprint and lists every topic sheet by domain. Each sheet treats one subject the way a toolbox talk would: the rule, the number that matters, the mix-up to watch for.

  2. Drill the cards

The free STSC practice test mixes cards from all five domains, with a note under every answer option. Narrow it to one domain when a sheet still feels shaky.

  3. Sit the timed mock

The timed mock exam runs at the pace BCSP sets for the real thing, 2 hours for 100 items, and keeps every note back until you finish.

  4. Check the logistics

Fees, scheduling, test-day rules and retakes each get a fact sheet with the BCSP source and the date we checked it. What the STSC costs is a good first stop.

STSC, STS or an OSHA 30 card

BCSP runs a general-industry sibling, the STS. The two share the same fees, exam length and item count as of October 2026; they part ways on the experience routes and the blueprint, with the STSC asking for construction experience. The STS vs STSC comparison shows which one matches the experience you already have.

If the card in your wallet says OSHA 30, the STSC and OSHA 30 comparison explains why OSHA treats its 30-hour class as a course completion record rather than a certification.
